A severe winter storm churned up huge waves in Wellington’s harbour on July 13. Waves of up to 10 m were reported. Commuter Kelvin King tweeted this video of the waves smashing into train tracks on his morning commute from Hutt Valley to the Wellington CBD along the harbour. Sustained winds of 120 kph were reported just offshore in the Cook Strait, NZ’s NIWA Weather tweeted, noting that those kind of winds were typical of a Category 3 cyclone. More than 1,300 homes in the New Zealand capital were without power, roads were closed and many flights were cancelled, Stuff.co.nz reported. Credit: Twitter/kelvinking_nz via Storyful
