Dramatic footage has emerged from China of a huge section of mountainside collapsing after heavy rain.

In the clip, which was filmed in Qianxinan Buyei and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province on July 10, an enormous pillar of clay and rock breaks away and crashes off the side of the mountain. No casualties were reported.

This is not the first occurrence if this type in 2017. Back over in June, around 40 homes were destroyed in Xinmo village, Maoxian county, after the the side of a mountain collapsed. Rescue teams were searching frantically for survivors trapped beneath the rubble.

President Xi Jinping urged on the rescue effort but only a couple and a baby have been rescued from the ruins, who were then taken to a hospital. Teams of workers used ropes to move the large blocks of rock, while others searched the rubble, according to the local authorities. That landslide block a 2 km stretch of a river.

These natural occurrences are not uncommon in China, especially after heavy rainfall. About nine years ago, 87.000 people were killed in an earthquake with a magnitude of 8, when it struck Wenchuan county in Sichuan province.

In a similar incident, Lloyd Cotsen was in Zuma Beach in Malibu, California when he inadvertently filmed a quite extraordinary mountain collapse at Point Dume that extended into an adjacent parking lot. No injuries were reported from the March 25 incident.

Disasters like this can be prevented by planting trees and bushes onto bare land. The roots of the plants will keep the soil from eroding.
