Rumble Activists opposed to a coal mine proposed by the Adani Group gathered at Commonwealth Bank branches in Newcastle on Wednesday, July 5, over the bank’s continued relationship with the multi-national conglomerate. The protesters said theirs was a peaceful action to call on the bank to oppose the mine, which they said would further threaten the health of the Great Barrier Reef, the Huffington Post reported. According to The Australian 11 CBA branches closed on advice from the NSW Police Force after learning of the protesters intentions. In a comment posted to Twitter, the activist group Stop Adani wrote, “Apologies to any @CommBank customers in Newcastle that 7 branches chose to shut instead of talking about Adani. Time to switch? #StopAdani” Credit: Twitter/Zianna Fuad via Storyful
