This video of a boat being rolled by a solid set of waves off Tuamotu Island in New Zealand has gone viral, gaining several million views over just a few short days.

Dean Foote was filming his friends surfing, when a “freak set” of waves broke into the channel. It may be what surfers really look forward to, but those huge waves managed to capsize a boat carrying some other surfers on board. The amateur photographer from Napier was obviously in shock.

He summed up his reaction in just one line. “It was a complete yard sale”, meaning that every must go, boards and surfers alike.

The full clip was shared all over the place. After Dean posted it on his Facebook, it got picked up by Yahoo New Zealand and was also shared on the Gisborne Herald’s Facebook page. It went totally viral in just 48 hours. While the video has been cut across different formats, it currently has several million views, and counting.

After processing the accident, realizing everybody was OK and helping collect some of the debris, Dean realized he had something special. “I was pretty excited to show all of the boys,” he said. The original video featured a 5 minute footage of Dean’s friends surfing, with the boat capsizing at the very end. He said the ocean had gone flat for 15 minutes, before the huge set of waves approached.

The boat was anchored at the time but was ripped out with the force of the wave. If it had not been anchored it could have ended up in a similar fate to the surfboards.
