White nationalist Tommy Robinson appeared at a UKAgainstHate rally in Manchester on June 11. Thousands of English Defence League supporters were surrounded by police, who warned residents to stay away from Piccadilly Gardens due to minor scuffles. The rally was called for in response to the recent Manchester Arena bombing, and featured a myriad of speakers, including Tommy Robinson, Sikh activist Mohan Singh, and “Gays Against Sharia” activist Tommy English. According to the rally’s website, "It has now been left to us, the ordinary people of the United Kingdom to stand up to hate, to unite and in one voice say ‘no more.’ " Local media reports said several EDL supporters scuffled with police after attempting to cross the protest line established along Station Approach near Piccadilly Station. In addition to the estimated 3,000 EDL protesters, a smaller LGBT counter-protest was held nearby calling for increased support to migrants.
