Leaving a loved one behind is a terrible feeling. We can’t even begin to imagine what it must be like for the brave men and women who go off overseas and have to leave their families back home. They shed a few tears, give strong hugs that leave a solemn promise that one day they will be back together again. As such complex and developed creatures, humans are able to bottle down their emotions, keep them locked tight or channel them towards hoping that the day their loved one will come home.

But there are so many humans out there who willingly and with a clean conscience decide to just abandon a family member out on the street. We are talking about people’s pets here. Whether it was because they grew tired of it, they lacked the conditions to keep it or it became too much of a hassle, it really doesn’t matter. We do not, by no means, approve of such actions! Still, so many animals end up on the streets or in shelters around the world. Most of them, unfortunately, never find another loving home to call their own.

This story, however, is not such and we are more than happy to share it with you!

This beautiful dog, called Maverick, was left at the Carson Animal Shelter in Gardena, California by his family. It was no mistake; they wanted him out of their home. No one knew what happened that made those people drop their pet off. All everyone knew was that the senior gentleman went from living in a nice, warm home, into a cold cage on the floor. The eight-year-old German Shepherd was devastated and wouldn’t even look at anyone in the shelter.

According to shelter employees, to call Maverick “depressed” was a bold understatement. Fortunately, he found a loving family to take him to a new home, a farm with horses, goats, chickens and other dogs. This video shows him beginning that journey.

Despite obvious facts, there are still people on this planet who like to believe that humans don’t leave an impact on dogs. How can that be true, with so many heartbroken animals left at shelter all over the globe?

Out of all the animals left at shelters, it seems that dogs are the number one target for abuse and abandonment by humans. It is simply astonishing how they choose to trust us after they have been through so much already. It is the same with this elderly dog.

After his owners literally dumped him at the shelter, Maverick was so distraught, he wouldn’t even look at people in the eye, punishing himself into isolation. But as “freedom walks” go, this one is no exception; seeing a dog finally getting out of his pen at the shelter and into a new, loving and caring family can wring a tear from even the coldest of hearts.

Maverick is cautious at first, but after a few loving pets and pats on the tummy, he gets a pep in his step and starts holding his head higher. He is going home at last!

I had a family member that did the same with a dog they had from a 6-week old puppy, they asked me to take her and drop her off at an animal shelter. Not me, my older sister and I kept her for her remaining 6 years and cared for "Molly", through her 'hip dysplasia' that German Shepards are noted for. To make a long story short, Molly was given the comforts she deserved until her passing. We loved her dearly. That was 5 years ago we had her put down because of the pain she was going through, we still miss Molly.
