A member of Vetpaw (Veterans Empowered To Protect African Wildlife) called Suzanne Boswell snapped this footage at the Limpopo province in South Africa of a fully grown elephant successfully fighting off a group of rhinos so that he can to enjoy a snack.

One group of onlookers witnessed the animals squaring up to eat a bunch of grass during a drought, when the elephant came and threw dirt, sticks, and even charged at the rhinos before they eventually fled the spot.

Suzanne says that it was unusual for rhinos and elephants to fight over food, since elephants don’t usually eat grass. The massive drought must have led the poor animal to look for other sources of food. She adds: “The elephant was being cheeky, he must have smelled it as he came charging through the trees straight towards the grass on the ground.”

After several quickfire rounds of dirt, the elephant gets to the dish he so determinedly defended and shoves a bunch of grass in his mouth as a sign of victory.

Since elephants are way bigger than the rhinos, a little aggression gets them a long way with other animals, so they usually get what they want. However, with wildlife one can never be too sure how they will react, so this is one possible outcome. All the animals could have ended up being hurt and badly, luckily this wasn’t the case.
