Power lines in Nelson, New Zealand, surged and sparked on Monday, November 14, as the South Island was hit by a series of earthquakes in which <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-37967178" target="_blank">at least two people</a> were reportedly killed.

<a href="https://twitter.com/geonet/status/798045671634800640" target="_blank">Geonet</a> measured Monday’s first quake at magnitude 7.5; the US Geological Survey put it at 7.8.

The first tremor struck around 60 miles northeast of Christchurch in the early hours of Monday. Damage from the initial earthquake and aftershocks was <a href="http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11747414" target="_blank">reported</a> as far away as the capital, Wellington.
