A passerby has captured on film the moment a man allegedly stole flowers from a memorial dedicated to those killed in an attack on Bourke Street in Melbourne just two days earlier.

Joshua Arnott filmed the man on January 22 as he walked away from the memorial holding the flowers, before police were later seen escorting him from a tram to return the bouquet, which was one of those placed in tribute to the victims.

Arnott told 7 News the police were quick to catch up with the thief.

It followed an attack on Friday, January 21, in which three adults and two children, a three-month-old baby and a 10-year-old, were killed when driver Dimitrious “Jimmy” Gargasoulas went on a dangerous rampage through the centre of Melbourne, police said in a statement on Saturday.

The ABC reported 15 people remained in hospital following the attack, two in a critical condition.

On Monday, Gargasoulas was taken to police headquarters after a stint in St Vincent’s Hospital to recover from a bullet wound received during a confrontation with police, The Age reported.
