The Piton de la Fournaise Volcano on the French island of La Réunion erupted for four days in a row, between January 31 and February 3. This video shows the phenomenon in the early hours of February 2.

To capture these images, Eric Gentelet walked for more than 3 hours in the night to arrive at 2,000 meters (1.2 miles) elevation just before sunrise.

“I began walking by night at 3 am to arrive when the sun was rising, to have the best light and be sure not to get too much rain when coming back,” he said.

The last time the volcano erupted was in September 2016.
