A diver had a close encounter with a trio of killer whales in open water while gathering scallops on February 12.

Hamish Stewart was swimming off Rangipukea Island, near Coromandel, New Zealand, when his sister Kyle Strongman spotted the killer whales circling their boat. She can be heard in the video warning her brother.

Stewart told Radio NZ he came up so quickly, his mask filled with water and he was unable to see them swimming beneath him. After getting closer than he was comfortable with, the orcas grouped and swam off.
