After a quiet 2016, Italy’s Mount Etna volcano began a period of activity in late January. A strong eruption was seen on the night of February 27, and continued on February 28. This footage shows lava and ash spewing from the volcano.

The eruptions didn’t pose any danger to nearby communities, according to <a href="http://palermo.repubblica.it/cronaca/2017/02/28/news/l_etna_torna_in_attivita_fontana_di_lava_e_esplosioni-159413550/" target="_blank">reports</a>, but could be seen from Catania and Taormina. <a href="http://www.aeroporto.catania.it/?lang=en" target="_blank">Fontarossa airport</a> remained open, but an orange alert was issued for pilots.
