This heartwarming video shows the wonderful moment when a brave rescuer saves a baby swan from a deadly fishing hook despite being attacked by the angry mother. Footage was filmed in Duisburg, Germany, when animal rescuer Stefan Brockling was called to assist a cygnet whose neck had been bound for over a week.

This volunteer managed to quickly lunge into the water and grab the tiny bird, while fending off the enraged mother with his foot, who attempted to strike out at him, ferociously hissing.

Stefan escaped unscathed and ran away with the baby swan to a safer location from where he then worked undisturbed. Next, he had to calm the screaming grey baby swan by placing a sock over its head and finally managed to remove the hook from cygnet’s throat.

If not removed, this hook would have been deadly for the cygnet. Even though the hook wasn’t yet in its neck, this swan was growing quickly. The longer the fish hook was there, the more life threatening it would’ve become. Eventually the baby would not have been able to breath.

Fortunately, Stefan was quick on the move and the rescue mission was completed. He then returned the cygnet to his mother, who was anxiously waiting, and stroke another maternal assault from the furious adult who charged at Stefan as he returned the baby in the water.

Swans are notoriously aggressive, particularly when interacting with their babies. Luckily, Stefan has experience with swans so he wasn’t too worried about being attacked and knew how to handle the situation.
