She Was Born With Something On Her Face – So Doctors Decided To Step In And Help
They knew something was wrong the minute she was born. Seeing their child for the first time was something alarming indeed.
Joe and Jennifer McGillis were not prepared to see the large lump under the newborn daughter Sloan’s left eye. Turns out, there was reason to worry after all.
Sloan was born with a rare condition. The growth was determined to be benign, but that didn’t mean it was normal.
It also meant that, over time, it would continue to grow, distorting the child’s face. Luckily, the McGillis’ found a surgeon who said he could help.
For Sloan, this meant an incision right below her eye, and along her nose. The doctors were wary for several reasons – the baby’s age, the closeness of the cutting to the facial muscles and nerves, and the inevitable healing.
There was also a possibility of the tumor coming back. If they were going in, they wanted to get it all and get it all NOW.
The operation took five hours. Doctors were able to remove MOST of the growth and Sloan would have to return for at least two more surgeries to get the rest once she gets older.
For now, the family is doing fine, and for one little girl, the outlook is a lot brighter.
