An elephant at the Liwonde National Park in Malawi was lucky to escape from a crocodile on April 10. Malawi-born Alexander Amuli M’betti Makanga filmed the entire encounter and shared it with the Central African Wilderness Safaris Facebook page.

In the video, a stealthy crocodile jumps from the water and, with its powerful jaws, grabs an elephant’s trunk. The elephant immediately panics and tries to get away, but the crocodile holds on. The elephant eventually escapes the crocodile’s grip.

The video shows a herd of elephants approaching a river covered in greenery. One of the younger elephants which is already at the river, when a crocodile jumps from the shallow, murky water and snaps it by the trunk.

Instantly there is absolute chaos in the herd, as the other animals starts retreating back from the river, while the youngster tries to set free from the crocodile’s hinges. The animals’ screams scare Alexander as well, but he is unable to help the poor animal.

However, not all is lost, as some of the older elephants decided that it is up to them to help the member of their herd, as they run back to his aid, stomping on the predator. It took one strong stomp from the elephant’s leg for the crocodile to let the younger loose and retreat in the river.

There is no information of the injuries the young elephant has endured.
