Despite the fact that pop star Ed Sheeran had previously declared taking a break from social media, it was the heartwarming request of one of his biggest fans – a hospital-bound little girl – that made him change his mind.

Nine-year-old Melody Driscoll has spent over 562 days of her life in the hospital, but according to her mother, Katrina, the only thing that has helped her get through her pain is listening to musician Ed Sheeran.

Katrina began a social media campaign over a year ago to ask Ed to visit Melody in the hospital in hopes of cheering her up.

Melody suffers from Rett syndrome – a rare, incurable neurological disorder that affects brain development, muscle coordination and communication.

Ed got the message loud and clear and arrived at Epsom Hospital in Surrey all on his own to deliver Melody the performance of a lifetime.

He made a beeline to her hospital room, where he delighted the little girl with a 90-minute visit, serenading her with two of his hit songs, “Photograph” and “Thinking Out Loud.”

Katrina told the Press Association that Melody has been “on cloud nine” ever since Ed’s visit. “I literally owe him my life. He doesn’t realise how much he’s done for her.”

And she had a present for him..

What a beautiful act of kindness Ed has done for Melody. He’s amazing!
