Hero Mom Donates Her Kidney To Give Son Second Chance At Life
Kate Lewis, 47, didn’t think twice about donating her kidney to her son James Lewis, 6. In his short life, he had already been through so much.
She knew if she could help improve his quality of life and give him a chance to live that it was the greatest gift of a mother’s love possible.
When he was just three-years-old, James developed a life-threatening heart condition called restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM). Doctors said it was most likely caused by a virus.
As his health began rapidly deteriorating, he was placed on a heart transplant list.
Because his heart wasn’t pumping blood regularly, his whole system got throttled. He had two minor strokes, went into cardiac arrest and his kidneys began to fail. Luckily, his new heart arrived just in time.
But although his transplant was a success, his kidneys were rapidly failing and dialysis wasn’t going to save him.
His parents offered to get tested to see if either were a match. Luckily, James’ mom was and they raced against the clock to prepare for surgery.
After her surgery was complete, they put her kidney in an ambulance and sent it to James two miles down the road at the children’s hospital.
His surgery was a success and although he will spend the rest of his life taking anti-rejection meds, his family is absolutely thrilled for the future.
