When Maricela was five-months pregnant, doctors performing a routine ultrasound discovered a life-threatening tumor on her daughter’s neck.

After several more rounds of testing, it was revealed the tumor was non-cancerous but had the potential to block Sandy’s airways, which posed a deadly threat.

The mother of four and husband Herry Diaz were not prepared for this shocking news.

After Sandy was delivered by C-section, she was whisked away to the neonatal ICU and hooked up to all sorts of tubes and wires.

Seeing their newborn with a softball-sized tumor – a lymphatic malformation – on her neck was an overwhelming sight.

Despite several procedures, the tumor continued to grow.

The desperate parents didn’t know where to turn until another doctor referred them to Dr. Milton Waner, director of the Vascular Birthmarks Institute at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Dr. Waner and his team agreed to perform an eight-hour surgery on one-year-old Sandy, which was a success.

The surgeon removed 95 percent of the tumor and thankfully little Sandy is back on the road to recovery, relearning how to eat, drink and swallow.

Sandy has been so brave to endure what she’s been through at such a young age.
