Warren Beatty Reads the Wrong Card, Accidentally Announces La La Land as Best Picture Over Moonlight Um, what just happened? What just happened? The biggest award of the 89th Annual Oscars was given to the wrong film. La La land was awarded Best Picture, when in reality Moonlight was the true winner. When Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway went to announce the winner of best picture at tonight’s Oscars, there was a pause, a look and then the announcement. La La land was the big winner! The entire cast and crew made their way on stage to accept the huge honor. Fred Berger, Jordan Horowitz and Marc Platt each gave inspired speeches. But as they excitedly spoke to the world, behind the scenes a commotion had formed. The film’s producer Fred Berger delivered the SHOCKING news that La La Land did NOT win best picture. The award was read incorrectly. Fred held up the card that correctly read Moonlight as the best picture winner and warren explained his mistake. The crowd was stunned. The cast of both moonlight AND La La land were shocked. I mean, we were just GLUED to the TV screaming WHAT JUST HAPPENED! Moonlight’s cast and crew came up on stage, hugging and crying and understandably shaken. They all had their turn to give their speeches. WOW! I mean, in the history of the nearly 90 academy awards has anything crazier than THIS happened??
