Wildlife photographer Marijke Arends Meiring captured this dramatic footage from the Kruger National Park in South Africa.

A small group of elephants were attempting to cross the rough waters of the Sabie River, when they ran into a bit of trouble. From the other side of the river, Marijke could see the group brave the currents, but thought the elephants were just playing in the water.

As they began to float down river, Marijke started to panic and thought they were drowning. Luckily, in the middle of the river was a small island where the elephants could stand and complete the rest of the crossing with ease.

A second group decided to make the crossing with a few calves and it was equally nerve-wracking to witness. The remaining elephants on the opposite side of the river paced the water’s edge but were too nervous to make the journey. They stood at the shore, calling to the group.
