The roof of a school gymnasium collapsed under the weight of heavy snow in Bend, Oregon, on Thursday, January 12, prompting the school district to close all schools for the day.

No one was inside the gym at the time of the collapse, according to a news report. Students were on their way to school when the roof collapsed and officials decided to close schools for the day. Those on buses were brought to school, and parents were asked to pick up their children as soon as possible.

School officials also decided quickly to tear down the gym after the roof collapse.

About two feet of snow fell in the Bend area over the last few days, prompting officials to warn about the potential for roofs to collapse. They encouraged people to clear their roofs of snow. Other roofs at Bend commercial buildings also collapsed from the weight of the snow.
