Controversial Philippines Leader Roderigo Duterte Recounts Phone Call With Trump
Phillippines President Roderigo Duterte said he believed he struck a rapport with President-elect Donald Trump during a phone call Duterte made Friday night, December 2, to congratulate Trump. Duterte said Trump endorsed his anti-drug campaign.
The account of the phone call has prompted some discussion about whether the US president-elect should be talking to Duterte at all, given that his anti-drug enforcement program has resulted in thousands of extrajudicial killings, and that Duterte has gone on record saying he would like to shift the favor of his country’s foreign policy away from the United States toward Russia and China. Further, Duterte is famously antagonistic toward journalists, and his country is considered one of the most dangerous for members of the press to work. He has also been consistently criticized for his attitudes towards women.
This video, posted Saturday, December 3, shows Duterte musing on the nature of the phone call and discussing what the two men talked about.
