Van der Bellen Supporters Celebrate in Vienna as Far-Right Concedes Defeat

Rumble Far-right presidential candidate Norbert Hofer <a href="" target="_blank">conceded defeat</a> in the Austrian presidential elections early Sunday evening, December 4, after projections put his rival, left-leaning Independent Alexander Van der Bellen, clearly ahead.

First results put Van der Bellen ahead with 53 percent of the vote, while Hofer was expected to come in with 46 percent. Viennese concert hall Sofiensaal erupted in cheers as the projections showed Van der Bellen clearly leading.

The elections were a rerun of the May polls, after irregularities in the postal vote.
