A heavy police presence was reported in Washington on Sunday, December 4, after an armed man entered a pizza restaurant.

The Metropolitan Police Department said 28-year-old Edgar Maddison Welch pointed a firearm in the direction of a staff at the Comet Ping Pong pizza parlour and was later arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon (gun). Police said they found two weapons at the location and another weapon in Welch’s car. No injuries were reported.

Welch said he went to the Comet Ping Pong pizza restaurant to investigate the “pizzagate” conspiracy theory, which accused former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and her campaign chief for running a child sex ring from the restaurant, according to The Washington Post. The pizzagate rumours were proven to be false, but the stories led to online attacks and threats against the parlor’s owner and staff. Comet Ping Pong’s owner later sought help from the FBI and local police.
