An teenage Afghan asylum seeker <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/german-police-arrest-17-year-old-linked-to-freiburg-student-murder/a-36631282" target="_blank">was arrested</a> at the weekend on suspicion of the rape and murder in Freiburg of a 19-year-old student, Maria Ladenburger.

Ladenburger’s body was found on the bank of a river in which she was drowned.

Speaking in parliament on December 5, government spokesman Steffen Seibert urged that the crime be treated as an isolated incident and that, if the suspect proved to be the culprit, it be seen as the act of an individual and not representative of either Afghans or refugees.

He said similar tragedies had happened in Germany before the arrival of refugees.
