Italian Coast Guard divers came to the rescue of what were described as four dolphins in the waters of Pantelleria on December 3, though other <a href="http://www.alqamah.it/2016/12/05/salvati-dalla-morte-quattro-delfini/" target="_blank">reports</a> said the creatures were probably Cuvier’s beaked whales.

The large cetaceans, ranging in length from 3.5-6 meters, got into difficulty in shallow waters and were first spotted by the head of a <a href="http://www.greendivers-sub.com/" target="_blank">local diving center</a>, according to <a href="http://www.trapanioggi.it/la-guardia-costiera-salva-quattro-delfini-spiaggiati/" target="_blank">Trapani Oggi</a>.

The rescue operation was long and difficult, lasting overnight into the morning of December 4, reports said.
