Rumble Mark Girardeau and Newport Coastal Adventure hit the whale-watching jackpot on November 30 when what they thought was a pod of six orcas off the coast of Orange County, California, turned out to be a contingency of more than 50.

“More orcas started popping up all over the place,” said Girardeau. “What we thought at first to be a pod of less than 10 ended up being 50-80 orcas spread out over several miles in sub groups of about 3-12. Everywhere we looked, we saw killer whales surfacing.”
