Gambia’s President-elect Adama Barrow called on President Yahya Jammeh to accept the results of the December 1 election and urged calm among Gambians, in a statement made on December 10.

Jammeh conceded defeat to Barrow on December 2, as Barrow’s victory was officially declared, but rolled back on December 9, saying he was refusing to accept the results and would call a new election.

Barrow said Jammeh has no constitutional authority to call another election, and that the country’s electoral commission had already officially declared Barrow president-elect. “I urge him to change his current position, and accept the verdict of the people in good faith, for the sake of the Gambia, our homeland, whose people deserve peace, freedom, and prosperity,” Barrow said.
