Strong Winds Batter Chennai as Cyclone Vardah Approaches

A powerful cyclone that formed in the Bay of Bengal was expected to bring flooding and high winds when it made landfall near the southern Indian city of Chennai on the afternoon of Monday, December 12.

The Tamil Nadu state government shut schools and colleges as residents of the state capitol prepared for the impact of Cyclone Vardah, which forecasters warned could bring 70 mph winds. <a href="http://www.ndtv.com/south/cyclone-vardah-tamil-nadu-andhra-pradesh-on-high-alert-chennai-braces-for-storm-1636811" target="_blank"><span class="caps">NDTV</span></a> reported that trains and flights had been cancelled as a result of the storm.
