A spokesman for the opposition coalition backing Adama Barrow, Gambia’s president-elect, on Monday, December 12, called on the incumbent, President Yahya Jammeh, to step down.

“We demand that outgoing President Jammeh immediately step down and hand over power,” opposition coalition representative Mai Ahmad Fatty said.

On Friday, a week after accepting the outcome of the December 1 election, Jammeh rejected the results citing voting "abnormalities” and called for a new election. Fatty accused Jammeh of undermining the transition process. He said the opposition would not recognize Jammeh’s proposal to appoint new supreme court justices to hear a court action against the election results.
