Dr. Salem Abu al-Nasr, a dentist in besieged Aleppo, shared a harrowing video outlining the current humanitarian situation inside Aleppo on December 12 as the regime claimed to have captured as much as 96 percent of the city.

Dr. al-Nasr, who used to work as a dentist in a medical center in the city’s Bustan al-Qasir neighborhood, explains that he was forced to flee to al-Ansari’s Mashad neighborhood, one of the last remaining rebel-held bastions in the city, due to the ongoing bombardment of Bustan al-Qasir. “The situation is apocalyptic,” al-Nasr says, “It is extremely dangerous to be here because of the constant bombing…of all kinds of weapons. All of this is happening in an area consisting of two square kilometers with at least 80,000 people, predominantly civilians.”

He closes by pleading with the international community to demand the cessation of the joint Syrian/Russian aerial bombardment campaign over the city, “Our hopes rely on you, we hope that you answer this call and do whatever you can. We hope to keep on living, and we love life, and I hope we meet again.”

Dr. al-Nasr is a prominent figure in the medical community in the opposition-held portion of the city. Last year activists successfully launched a campaign for him to be released by rebels who had abducted him during a crackdown on medical professionals inside Aleppo. In the time since, he has regularly used his Facebook profile to increase awareness about the humanitarian crisis in Aleppo.
