Right up until the last minute, it wasn’t clear we’d get into east Aleppo. When we arrived, the scene was heart-breaking. People are faced with impossible choices. You see their eyes filled with sadness.”

Staffan de Mistura, the UN Special Envoy on Syria, said that as many as 50,000 will be evacuated towards the western Aleppo countryside, including at least 10,000 who represent Syrian rebels and their families. Many of those 10,000 affiliated with Syrian rebel groups are likely to be evacuated further towards rebel-held areas of the Idlib province.
