With five evacuation convoys having been confirmed to have left the city on December 15, Aleppo-based activist Zouhir al-Shimale posted a final message before boarding a bus headed to the western Aleppo countryside on the morning of December 16.

Several thousand civilians and rebels have left the city aboard the aforementioned convoys, leaving at least 50,000 remaining inside the city awaiting more buses, according to recent statements made by UN Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura.

The majority of displaced Aleppo residents are expected to be evacuated further westwards into the Idlib Province, while a number of critically wounded civilians are expected to head north towards the Turkish border for urgent medical care. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has already indicated that the country is ready to accept an undisclosed number of Aleppo civilians, according to opposition media reports.
