Hundreds gathered for a mass roll-a-thon on December 17 at Parliament House, possibly for the last time after the federal government approved the building of a security fence.

Parliament security protocols were re-examined after demonstrators managed to twice breach security in the final parliamentary sitting week from November 30 to December 1. Fearing the traditionally open lawns would no longer be accessible, users on Facebook organised a mass gathering to roll down the hill to celebrate “simple joys” and “freedom”.

One of the endorsed proposals was the construction of 2.6 metre fence around the building, preventing access to the iconic grassy lawns. A moat was also reportedly proposed, but rejected.
