As the manhunt for alleged Berlin attacker Anis Amri was underway on December 21, German Foreign Minister Steinmeier returned to Breitscheidplatz to pay respects at a vigil alongside Italian Foreign Minister Angelino Alfano.

The attack occurred on Monday, when a truck mowed down a crowd of shoppers and smashed through wooden huts selling gifts, mulled wine and sausages, killing 12 and injuring at least 50. It was the deadliest attack on German soil since 1980, according to Reuters.

German police were pursuing a Tunisian man who escaped from the scene, after initially arresting a suspect who was not involved in the fatal attack. He was released for lack of evidence.
