Activists chanting slogans and waving signs took to the streets of New York City on Wednesday, December 21, to show their solidarity for the remaining civilians in opposition-controlled areas of Aleppo.

The march, which began outside United Nations headquarters and ended in Times Square, was to “demand that the UN and the international community pressure Russia and the Assad Regime to stop the killing,” according to a Facebook event description.

Signs waved at the rally were emblazoned with the phrases “NYC stands with Aleppo” and “No More Pain, No More Violence, No More Hate, Liberate Syria.” Mayor Mohamed Khairullah of nearby New Jersey borough Prospect Park was among the marchers present. Khairullah, who cleared this footage for Storyful, is from Syria and can be seen in these videos playing a thank you message from Lina Shamy, a well-known activist and resident of Aleppo.
