Less than 24 hours after the Islamic State released a harrowing video showing the execution of two Turkish soldiers on December 22, the Turkish Air Force launched widespread overnight airstrikes in al-Bab.

The Islamic State-affiliated Amaq News released footage purporting to show the aftermath of the airstrikes in the town. Severed limbs, dead babies, and blood-stained streets are shown throughout the video, while numerous buildings appear destroyed. The Turkish military said it killed at least 40 IS fighters in airstrikes, which targeted the group’s headquarters in the town. However, local activists in al-Bab reported a large number of civilian casualties inside the town.

Turkish military forces have called for all civilians remaining inside the city to evacuate due to the escalated threat of collateral damage in the ongoing airstrike campaign.
