Supermaxi Perpetual Loyal crossed the finish line of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race at about 2:30 am on Wednesday, December 28, breaking the record for the 628 nautical mile race.

It was a first for race veteran Anthony Bell, who was doused in champagne and tossed into the harbour according to tradition.

The yacht came in ahead of top-pick Wild Oats XI, which was forced to retire halfway through the race, and Giacomo.

“I don’t think anyone expected us to do well in this race, the bookies certainly didn’t,” Bell <a href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-12-28/sydney-to-hobart-perpetual-loyal-takes-line-honours-race-record/8149904" target="_blank">said</a> shortly after docking.
