Despite a heightened police presence in Cologne ahead of New Year’s Eve celebrations on December 31, all eyes were on a light show outside the city’s cathedral.

Police said they had done their “utmost” to ensure the safety of celebrants one year after widespread reports of robbery and assault were made to police.

According to local reports citing police, a group of about 1,000 men, described as “mostly” of North African or Arab origin, had gathered at the cathedral to celebrate, and many of the attackers were reportedly from this group, surrounding and assaulting women.

The light show, which illuminated the square and buildings around the Cathedral, can be seen in this video.
