Police in Cologne mounted a huge security operation on New Year’s Eve, aimed at preventing a repeat of widespread sexual assaults that were reported on December 31, 2015.

According to Deutsche Welle, local police chief Jürgen Mathies admitted racial profiling was used by officers, aimed at “men who appeared to be of North African extraction,” hundreds of whom were “intercepted” by police at the city’s main railway station.

A tweet from the local police described the screening of “hundreds of Nafris” at the station.

Such tactics, and the use of the term “Nafris,” were criticized by left-wing politicians, the <a href="http://www.rp-online.de/politik/koeln-polizei-faengt-in-silvesternacht-hunderte-nordafrikaner-nafris-ab-aid-1.6497990" target="_blank">Rheinische Post said</a> on January 2.
