Beijing was shrouded in thick smog on Monday, January 2.

The <a href="http://www.bjepb.gov.cn/bjhrb/index/tpxw/803505/index.html" target="_blank">Beijing Municipal Environmental Protection Bureau</a> issued an Orange Alert for the region due to heavy air pollution. Smog will continue to affect Beijing, Tianjin and other parts of northeastern China on January 3 and 4, according to the <a href="http://www.cma.gov.cn/2011xwzx/2011xqxxw/2011xzytq/201701/t20170103_376937.html" target="_blank">China Meteorological Administration</a>.

Air pollution on Sunday prompted the cancellation of hundreds of flights and the closure of highways in the area, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-pollution-idUSKBN14M02Q" target="_blank">reported Reuters</a>.
