As Turkish-backed Syrian rebels continue to lay siege to the Islamic State-held town of al-Bab, Turkish artillery fire and other aerial bombardments inside the city have killed and wounded a number of civilians and IS fighters since January 1.

This video, released by the Islamic State-affiliated Amaq News, purports to show the aftermath of Turkish artillery shelling inside al-Bab. A number of dead bodies can be seen in the footage, while a number of small children appear wounded.

The Turkish military said on January 3 that it killed at least 18 IS fighters and wounded 37 others in January 2 artillery shelling and clashes in the area.

Meanwhile, the Pentagon confirmed that it has sent several fighter jets to support ongoing Turkish ground forces in the area surrounding al-Bab in recent days. Spokesman Peter Cook said that they did not carry out any airstrikes and that the flights were meant as a “visible show of force.” The decision was made following a request from the Turkish military to provide air support in light of Turkish forces sustaining heavy casualties after coming under fire in several recent clashes.
