Madonna may be one of the top performers of the decade, but the singer admits, she doesn’t exactly feel like he’s accepted. In fact, she feels oppressed. The 58-year-old singer covers the latest issue of Harper Bazaar magazine, the 150th anniversary edition with her signature sultry stare. And Madonna has several “signature” titles attached to her name. Innovative, provocative, limitless. But despite all of her accomplishments, the singer says she feels oppressed by society. “I know a lot of people would go, ‘oh that’s ridiculous for you to say that,’” she told the mag. “’You’re a successful, white, wealthy pop star.’ But I’ve had the shit kicked out of me for my entire career, and a large part of that is because I’m female and also because I refuse to live a conventional life. “ Madonna went to explain that her unconventional life often makes people feel uncomfortable. “I’ve created a very unconventional family,” she said. “I have lovers who are three decades younger than me. I feel like everything I do makes people feel really uncomfortable.” Madonna insists though, her music keeps her going. “The only way I’ve been able to survive the betrayals of lovers, family members and society is to be able to create as an artist.”
