Loving Dog Adopts Orphaned Baby Opossum

Each year, millions of wild animals are left to fend for themselves in the wilderness after their parents were killed during hunting season or by an unassuming car on the highway. The tiny pups and kittens often die because of the lack of nutrition or the surge of predators after they are left defenseless.

Many countries try to solve this problem by building natural bridges over highways that can help prevent the car accidents, but even those pathways aren’t always enough. The bottom line is, drivers on highways can’t see the animals fast enough and often times end up being victims themselves.

In this video, a baby opossum was left motherless on the side of the highway. This tiny baby had a stroke of luck when he met Hantu. She is a white German Shepherd, who adopted Poncho, an orphaned baby opossum after animal rescuers found the infant opossum clinging to the side of his mother after she had been tragically hit by a car. Hantu didn’t have any pups of her own, so she easily took on the role of protector and mother to the small baby. The two now live together at the Rare Species Fund.
