A pregnant woman who was regularly beaten to force her to work as a prostitute for a gang of Romanian crooks has been rescued after a police operation on the Spanish holiday island of Ibiza.

Most of the dozens of women rescued were underage and had been recruited by the Romanians using the loverboy technique, where they persuaded the girls to start a relationship with them, then asked them to join them for a new life on the Spanish island.

Once there however, away from friends and family, they were beaten and forced to work as prostitutes.

The pregnant woman who was among those rescued had been lying on the floor getting a further beating from her captors when police burst in and rescued her. She said she had been kneeling there for six hours without food or water.

Other women said that they were kept in such appalling conditions and so badly mistreated that there had been several suicide attempts. Women who got pregnant were forced to have an abortion, some of the women provided police with mobile phone images confirming the abuse they had suffered.

The police operation was launched after one of the women managed to get hold of a phone number for a newly established police hotline to report the abuse, and it resulted in an investigation that led to the arrest of the Romanian gang.

The women were found to be working in two houses, a brothel and two apartments and as well as the women who were freed, police said they had arrested nine Romanians.

Police are also looking to arrest the Romanian gang’s real wives and girlfriends back home and have tracked some 700,000 EUR (588,965 GBP) that was sent back to the women by the crooks.
