An infra-red camera has caught the moment when the first female Giant Panda was born in the Spanish capital.

Panda mum Hua Zui Ba gave birth to her 180-gramme baby in Madrid Zoo and officials say she is "well formed, very active and has excellent vital signs."

The newborn cub, who is still pink and looks tiny compared to her mum, is already suckling and zoo experts say she has shown great progress in the first week of her life.

Footage of the birth, caught on an infra-red camera, shows Hua Zui Ba licking her paws, which is a sign that she is about to give birth.

And only minutes later, staff said the Giant Panda gave birth to her new cub. She caught it in her paws and the video shows how she then brought her baby up to her face to have a closer look.

Specialists at the zoo were helped by experts from China's Chengdu Giant Panda Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding.

They were tipped off about the imminent birth when Hua Zui Ba stopped eating and began to routinely lick her paws. Madrid zoo now has four giant pandas.
