Check Out This Rare Footage Of Killer Whale Prepping A Sea Turtle For Lunch
Have you heard of sea turtles flying? Because you are about to...sort of.
This Orca decides to play with its food which happens to be a sea turtle. Orcas don't often feed on turtles but this one was hungry. His mom probably never taught him not to play with his food.
The incredibly rare footage was taken by tour guide Phil Courter during a boat trip around the Galapagos Islands, off the coast of Fernandina Island. One delighted passenger 'never imagined' he'd see the event, even though it's not uncommon for orcas to tease their prey this way.
If you, too, think that the orca shouldn't be playing with its food like that, you might be in for a surprise as to why it's doing it. Orcas are known to use this technique when they hunt their prey, either to remove the risk of the prey hurting them, like a seal with it's teeth, or in this case, to help remove the shell and skin off the turtle, which is inedible.
Can you guess what happens to the sea turtle's hard shell when it smacks on the surface of the water, after being thrown so high in the air?
