An allegedly abusive husband tried to jump from the window of his fifth-floor apartment when police arrived to arrest him.

But police officers managed to grab hold of the man and prevent him from falling to his death in the Scampia district of Naples in southern Italy.

The 31-year-old man, originally from Morocco, is accused of abusing his wife over a four-year period.

She finally found the courage to report him to the police and officers turned up at the apartment they shared together to arrest him.

However, just as police were starting the procedure to formally identify and arrest him, he dashed for the window and tried to jump.

But the officers reacted quickly with one grabbing one of his legs and the other holding on to the waistband of his trousers leaving the man hanging from the window.

The scene was filmed by a third policeman outside the building and the footage went viral after it was uploaded online.

The 27-second clip shows the husband shouting and trying to fight off the police officers while they struggle desperately to hold on to him.

They eventually managed to get hold of his other leg and dragged him back through the window to safety.

He now faces charges of resisting arrest as well as of verbally and physically abusing his wife whenever she refused him money for drugs.

Local media reports that he was arrested two years ago for trying to kill a neighbour who tried to stop him beating up his wife.

He was later released, supposedly to be deported from the country, but somehow managed to return to the apartment.
