A young boy and two of his family members were electrocuted to death by a short-circuiting pump in a pond, with footage showing a shocked little boy crying next to the body of one of the adults.

The trio were among six relatives visiting the popular Wansui Mountain Scenic Area in Kaifeng City, in Central China’s Henan Province, where the boy reportedly jumped into the pond to cool off.

But the family and indeed all the other tourists were unaware that the pond was off limits, as it is used as a reservoir and also has machinery inside, reports said.

The boy was first to be electrocuted at around noon that day, while his father and female relative also fell victim to the malfunctioning electric pump after following the boy into the water.

Staff at the scenic park were informed of the freak accident and shut down the pump before retrieving the bodies of the victims.

Amateur footage from the tourist spot shows relatives grieving after first the boy and later the two others were retrieved from the pond.

A little boy can be seen crouching next to one of the corpses, visibly shocked, before a man picks him up and carries him away from the scene.

The trio were pronounced dead by arriving paramedics shortly afterwards.

Reports said Kaifeng City authorities evacuated the park and suspended operations by 2:40pm that afternoon, pending a formal investigation into the accident.

The park is also said to be in negotiations with the family over financial compensation over the tragedy.

Initial investigations found that there were no warning signs around the pond warning tourists to stay clear of the water, with only occasional reminders from park employees.
