An endangered baby monkey was born in a zoo, sparking hopes that a special conservation programme for its species is on the right track.

The adorable newborn sooty mangabey monkey (Cercocebus atys) was seen enjoying time with its mum in the zoo of Barcelona in the Catalan region of Spain.

A video shows the male baby monkey hugging his mother while being breastfed as he curiously watches the zoo visitors.

Visitors saw the monkey taking his first steps in the zoo enclosure where the troop lives.

His mother is called Monika and she is a seven-year-old who was born in the same zoo. His father is named Racky and he was born in Ghana 12 years ago but arrived in Barcelona two years ago as part of the conservation programme. Their newborn son has yet to be named.

Sooty mangabey monkeys are normally found in Africa in forests along the coast from Senegal to Ghana. The monkeys in the zoo in Barcelona belong to a special conservation programme in Europe.

The programme is geared towards breeding endangered species such as the sooty mangabey monkey and it started in 1994 with 41 animals, in ten different zoos and animal parks. There are currently 90 animals in 15 zoos and parks that are part of what is praised as a successful programme.

The sooty mangabey monkey is one of the 25 most endangered species due to the disappearance of their natural habitat. They are also hunted for human consumption due to their popularity as so-called "bush meat" in some African countries.
